Using and citing AI

Generative AI can be a powerful tool, but please:

  • Always confirm with your professor whether AI tools like ChatGPT are allowed for each assignment.
  • Always verify information and sources generated by AI tools
    • AI has been known to generate false information and to cite non-existent sources
    • AI-generated text mines people's intellectual property without crediting them, which raises ethical concerns
  • Note that using uncited text generated using AI while writing and producing your assignments is considered plagiarism under university policy.

Please see the “Citing Generative AI” tab for information on how to cite AI in various citation styles.

Why Cite?

You must give credit to the sources that you use for your assignments, whether those sources are books, articles, websites, images, interviews, films, or sound recordings. This allows readers to locate and check your sources and furthers the scholarly conversation.

Many different citation styles exist, so check with your professor to see what their preferred style is.

On this page we point you to resources for the most commonly used citation styles; select the tab of a style to see the corresponding style manual, quick citation guides, and other helpful links.
