Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake in the spring of 2013.
It grew out of Phyllis's account of losing her shiny new orange shirt on her first day of school at the Mission. It has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and community agencies to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
On this day of September 30th, we are called upon to listen with open ears to the stories of survivors and their families and to remember those that didn't make it.

In honour of this event, the library has gathered books from our collection on the topic of residential schools, stories from indigenous writers, and books that confront the settler with us.
There are three different "display", ebooks (which can be read online 24/7), print books and children's books (which can be borrowed in the library).
If you would like to learn about indigenous resources in the library as well as how to research indigenous subjects, please check out our guide (here).
