Downloading Zotero desktop app, log in and syncing with online Zotero

Zotero can be used in your browser window or by downloading a desktop app.

However, the desktop app works best and most instructions located here and on Zotero's web page are for the desktop app.
 

                 

 

  • The next page will have two options for download: The Desktop App and the Plug-In. Zotero will automatically detect what computer and browser you are using and display the correct options. Click on the left option for your computer.

 

  • The app will download to your computer. Open the app in your files and follow the steps to install the app onto your device. Once that is complete open the desktop app.
     
  • Once you have opened Zotero, you can sync your app to your online account. To sync your account, first access the settings menu.
    • On a Windows computer, you can access the settings by clicking on "Edit > Settings"
    • On a Mac, you can access the settings by clicking on "Zotero > Preferences"
  • In the new box that appears click on “Sync”. Login with your Zotero account, or click the link to create a new account or recover your password. Click "set up syncing" to log in with your account
  • Once you return to the main Zotero window, click on the  circular arrow in the right corner to sync the database to your online database.
