Alberta Science Programs – Topic Summary
The following chart summarizes topics within Alberta’s science program. Please refer to the program of studies for detailed information on what students learn at each grade level. Topics have been classified as Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science solely for the convenience of the reader. Some units are highly integrative and draw on the subject matter from more than one discipline.
Connection : information for teachers
Connection: Information for Teachers is Alberta Education’s online newsletter for teachers. Connection features a wide range of information to support Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 teachers. Included are updates regarding curriculum and resources, assessment, technology integration, inclusive education, career initiatives, and professional development opportunities.
Education for Reconciliation- Science lesson plans
These sample lesson plans support Education for Reconciliation through the inclusion of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives; treaty education; and residential schools’ experiences, with learning outcomes identified in the current Alberta Programs of Study for Grades 1 to 9 in Science.

Each sample lesson plan includes content(s) or context(s) related to one or more of the following aspects of Education for Reconciliation:

diverse perspectives and ways of knowing of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit, including values, traditions, kinship, language, and ways of being;
understandings of the spirit and intent of treaties; or
residential schools’ experiences and resiliency.

Teaching with an Indigenous Perspective

Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guide
The FNESC/FNSA Secondary Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guide provides educators with resources to support the integration of the rich body of First Peoples (unappropriated) knowledge and perspectives into secondary Science classes (as well as other curricular areas).

The guide includes background information on how First Peoples’ knowledge and perspectives in science can be recognized and included in science inquiry. It also offers curriculum planning suggestions, and provides examples of fully developed multi-grade thematic units that correspond with the BC Science Curriculum for grades 10 to 12.
