Filtering is where you manipulate the search results without changing your search terms. Filtering allows you to narrow down your search and include or exclude certain resources. You can find the filters on the left side of the computer screen on the search results page. If you are on mobile, filters are available underneath the blue banner where it says "Group & Refine This Search"; click on this menu to open up the filter options.
By default, any filters you select will apply to any further searches you make on the same page. For example, if you select the "article" filter and then conduct another search in the search bar, the "article" filter will still apply to your new search. To opt out of this feature, unclick the "retain filters" box above the filter menu. You may also "clear filters" to remove any filters you have applied to your search, or individually remove filters by hitting the "x" button by the filter name when they appear at the top of the page.

For more detailed information about how filters change your search results, read the guides to the different filters on this page. For an overview of all available filters, review the Filters Table PDF.
The "Limit To" Filter allows you to select specific categories or content types. The options include limiting to peer reviewed items, full text items, and open access items.
You can select multiple options to apply to your search with this filter category
The "Held By Library" Filter allows you to expand or limit your search to collections held by different libraries. By default, your search will list only results for items found in the King's University Library. Items that appear in this search are automatically available to you as a King's Library user. You have full borrowing privileges to the items included in the search results, including accessing online items or borrowing and placing holds on physical items. You can expand your search to include the following:
For more information about accessing materials from NEOS libraries, visit the NEOS Libraries subpage on this guide.
Source Type refers to what type of resource object the search results will show. Source types include books, articles, music recordings, and more. You can select multiple source types, or choose a source category that includes multiple similar source types.
For example, if you are only looking for Print Books and do not want eBooks included in your search results, you may select the "Print Books" filter. Alternatively, if you are interested in either format of books, you can select the source category "Books" to have both options included.

Certain titles may have multiple formats or editions; you can use the "Search Results Display" filter to adjust how these different versions are displayed in the search results. By default, all versions of an item will be grouped into one box. When an item has multiple versions, you will see text in the bottom half of the detail box that reads "Other Editions and Formats at The King's University".

Click on "View all" to reveal a menu that has all versions of that item listed, which can be further filtered or explored in this menu.
To see all items listed separately, change the filter selection to "Show All", and all editions and formats will be listed separately. To hide alternate versions, select "Hide Duplicates"

Publication Year allows you to filter your results according to a specific date range. You can choose to quickly limit your search to items published within the last 5, 10, or 25 years using the premade filters in this filter menu.
Alternatively, you can customize your date range using the text boxes. Enter the earliest and the latest year in the "From" and "Through" boxes, respectively, and then click the "Apply Year Range" button. You have the option to leave the "Through" box blank if you only want to set a lower limit. This will show you all items published between the present day and the earliest year you specified.

Library items have associated subjects assigned to them to make them easy to classify and find. When you conduct a search on the library website, you can filter through all the subjects that are associated with items with that search. Subjects are are organized into categories that can be further divided into subcategories. You have the option to limit to a particular category, which will automatically select all the subcategories associated with it. Alternatively, you may only select particular subcategories to be more specific with your search.
You can filter according to the authors or creators that are associated with the items brought back by your search. An author or creator can be any person who is primarily responsible for the item's creation. This includes writers, directors, artists, composers, musicians, performers, producers, and more.
This filter can be useful when an item has many versions with different contributors. For example, the poem Beowulf has been translated multiple times. If you are looking for a particular translation, you can use this filter to select a particular translator as the creator. Similarly, a search for "Sonata No. 5" can refer to many different musical compositions. Using the author filter can narrow down which composition you are referring to.

You can choose to expand or limit your search with additional tools in this menu:

The audience filter allows you to show only results that cater to a particular audience. There are two audience levels that you can choose from: Juvenile and Not Juvenile.
Items classified as being for a Juvenile audience can range from those intended for toddlers (such as picture books or early readers) to grade 12 (including Young Adult novels). Physical juvenile items can generally be found in the Curriculum section of the library, which houses materials for education students to use in classrooms. Not Juvenile encompasses everything that is not intended for a juvenile audience.

The majority of items in the library's catalogue will be in English, but there may be items in other languages that you can access. You can filter for items of a certain language using the language filter. You may select multiple languages as shown in the filter menu to only show results from that language.
