What is NEOS?

NEOS is a consortium of government, health, college and university libraries that cooperate to share library resources, technology, collections and knowledge. NEOS Libraries can be found throughout the province, with a large portion of libraries right here in Edmonton! For more information about the NEOS consortium, visit the NEOS Libraries Website

The King's University is a proud member of the NEOS consortium. This means that as a student, staff, or faculty member, you have borrowing privileges at any other NEOS library while visiting their campus. Once you have set up an account with the participating library, you can access materials that library owns.

When accessing materials from other institutions, keep the following in mind:

  • Physical items must be returned to the library they were borrowed from. Books taken out from a library can only be checked in (and removed from your account) by the issuing library. Items returned to King's Library that belong to another library cannot be returned and may result in overdue fines
  • You must abide by the rules and regulations of any library you visit. Ensure you are familiar with any fine policies, borrowing procedures, and loan terms from the library you are accessing, as each library may have different policies
  • Electronic items (including eBooks and online databases) can only be accessed while physically on the library's campus. You will not have off-campus access to electronic items.

Borrowing NEOS Items

If you wish to access collections available at other libraries in the NEOS consortium, you must visit that library in person. Check the hours of the library you wish to visit to ensure that a staff member will be able to help you. Then, simply visit the library you wish to use with your student ID card and a piece of government issued ID. Speak to library staff to get an account set up. Once an account is set up, you will have borrowing privileges at that library and can access their collection.

When using other libraries, keep the following in mind:

  • Libraries have different rules and procedures; ensure you are familiar with the borrowing policies of the library you are using. Be respectful of the library's rules and ensure items are kept in good condition
  • Access to certain items may be limited depending on the library and the item type. Before taking a long journey to visit a library for a specific item, you may wish to check with the library to ensure you will have access to it as a NEOS member
  • If you borrow an item from a library, you must return it to the same library you checked the item out from. Do not return books from other libraries to The King's University. The King's University will not be able to check these items in and you will likely result with fines and possibly be charged for a lost book.
  • Electronic items are limited to on-campus use only. Each time you visit a NEOS library, you will have to request a password to access items like eBooks or electronic journals. The access is limited to while you are at the library.

Searching for NEOS Items

Expanding Your Search

You are able to search for NEOS items in the King's University catalogue by adjusting the filters. By default, the search results will only display items available at The King's University. To expand your search, locate the filters in the search results page. This is on the left side of your screen if you are on a computer. If you are on a mobile device, you must select "Group & Refine This Search" at the top of the page to open the filters.

Find the filter that says "Held by Library". You can expand your search with the following options:

  • The King's University: This option is selected by default and will show you all the items available in The King's University Library.
  • Edmonton NEOS Libraries: This option will show you items available in other NEOS libraries in Edmonton, but will not include any libraries outside of the Edmonton Area
  • Outside Edmonton NEOS Libraries: Selecting this option will show you items available in NEOS libraries outside of Edmonton. All of these libraries are located within Alberta. Keep in mind, though, that you must physically visit the library you wish to borrow items from in order to access them. Any items borrowed from these libraries must be returned to the same library. Be aware when selecting this filter that it will show you items that will require significant travel time.
  • Libraries Worldwide (Not Recommended): Libraries worldwide will show you items that are available internationally. We strongly recommend NOT selecting this filter as the items will not arrive in time for your assignments and many suitable alternatives can be found within the region.

Identifying Libraries

To learn which library holds a book, click on the item from the search results page to be taken to the item detail page. Scroll past the item details to the box that says "Other Availability & Holdings" and select the "Other Libraries Worldwide) button.

Clicking this button will open a new window that lists all the libraries that hold this item, starting with the closest item to you to the furthest. Click on a library to see more information including it's address and contact information.
